The smoke vent window is designed on the same lines as a traditional sliding sash, with the top sash in front of the bottom sash. Both top and bottom sashes open outwards, enabling smoke to flow through the sashes when opened.

The opening mechanisms can be controlled and linked into a fire alarm system; windows will then operate automatically in an emergency to help vent smoke from the building. The unit can be controlled by using either magnetic, mains with battery back up systems.
